About TakomaZone
TakomaZone has been making music in and around Takoma Park, Maryland since 2002.
Our roots are organic. We started off in each others' living rooms and in community rooms, where we invited friends to listen and play. Wanting something more performance-oriented, we pooled our money to rent 10 weeks of performance space in October 2002 at The Electric Maid in Takoma, DC.
Those 10 weeks were transformative; some fourteen musicians came every Thursday night not merely to jam, but to play solo and listen to each others' tunes. We started backing each other, developing a sound that was something tighter than a jam but looser than a fixed band configuration. Knowing we'd found a good thing, and presented with a new opportunity, we moved to our current weekly Saturday evening gig at Savory Cafe, Takoma Park's favorite coffee spot.
Our music keeps changing in the best of ways with more originals, innovative covers
and experimentation with bluegrass, western swing, folk, rock, and jazz. Our members play in various local bands, each with its own flavor. See the 'some groups' link to the left.
